Charles Carter joined Beeson Divinity School’s faculty as an adjunct professor in 1999. A native of Birmingham, he has served churches in Alabama and Kentucky, has held leadership roles in the Southern Baptist Convention, including nine years on the International Mission Board, and served two terms as president of the Alabama Baptist Convention. Carter was senior pastor of Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Birmingham, from 1971-98, and was named pastor emeritus following retirement. He regularly serves as interim pastor for Alabama Baptist churches and is a Life Trustee of Samford University. He has been distinguished visiting professor of religion at Judson College, in Marion, Alabama. He and his wife, Janice, have two adult daughters.
